Installing the ‘Project Looking Glass’ 3D Desktop on Ubuntu

Sunday, February 25th, 2007

Project Looking Glass is an open source development project which evolved from a Sun Microsystems advanced technology experiment.

In a nutshell, Project Looking Glass is a 3D desktop environment which aims to rethink the traditional way in which users interact with computers. Its based around java and looks to be pretty funky.

What’s more – there are .debs available that are compatible with Ubuntu so I thought I’d give it a try!

I’ve documented the installation of project looking glass on Ubuntu here on the just uber wiki. If you’d like to have a go at doing this yourself just follow the steps. Feel free to update the wiki with your findings.

Before you rush off and start having a go, please bear in mind that looking glass is in it’s infancy. Its a great idea, but you probably won’t be switching to it from gnome just yet… For a tutorial detailing how to use looking glass go here.

Have fun!

Or my personal favorite, a Hagglund BV206 (just £6,500), ideal for rugged terrain and extreme climatic conditions.

You can now swing on over to the Ministry of Defence Disposal Services Agency website for a bargain.

The MoD opened its auction website on Sunday offering a range of used military equipment from IT to aircraft you can get all sorts!

Unfortunately for all of you Dr Evil types out there, the site doesn’t auction off weapons or ammo….

The WoW is Now! – Microsoft India Corporate Anthem – Worst Song Ever?

Monday, February 12th, 2007

Microsoft India have released a wonderful corporate anthem celebrating the uberness that is Windows Vista. (Behold – The usage of sarcasm!)

You can access it by following the links repeatedly mentioning WoW! on the Microsoft India website, or by clicking here for the version stored at justuber.com

And remember – “…don’t even try asking me to lend you mine, ’cause you only get the WoW if it’s genuine…” ‘Nuff said…

MP3 on openSUSE – 5 Minute Fix

Friday, February 9th, 2007

Unlike its commercial cousin SUSE, openSUSE doesn’t come with proprietary and/or patent encumbered software due to legal restrictions.

This happens to be a bit of a nuisance, as most of us like to play DVDs and MP3s on our computers without having to bugger about too much getting it going.

This is a < 5 minute fix to get MP3 working on gnome on openSUSE 10.2.

First of all, head on over to the MP3 page on Fluendo.com – follow the instructions there to download the Fluendo MP3 decoder. Don’t be worried about the ’shopping cart’ etc – the MP3 decoder is free…

Extract the fluendo-mp3-1.i386.tar.bz2 file.

As root, copy the libstflump3dec.so file to the gstreamer plugin directory by entering the following command:

’sudo cp libgstflump3dec.so /opt/gnome/lib/gstreamer-0.10′

Open up Banshee and enjoy – you are now ready for MP3…
